Spark! Helping Our Girls Feel Beautiful

new_moon_coverWe love that the editors at the fabulous New Moon celebrated the magazine’s 20th anniversary with a feature on 25 Beautiful Girls — and a reminder of what true beauty is: “Everyone loves [this theme] because it’s about the beauty of girls being themselves. Girls living their lives and making their way in the world. It supports girls in seeing and valuing their own unique beauty in actions, not appearance.”

…Which sort of gets us thinking about a new petition the folks at A Mighty Girl are preparing for Disney’s executives. So far, nearly 10,000 people have signed the petition to protest how Disney changed Brave‘s Merida in preparation for her official coronation as a Disney princess: “… by making her skinnier, sexier and more mature in appearance, you are sending a message to girls that the original, realistic, teenage-appearing version of Merida is inferior; that for girls and women to have value — to be recognized as true princesses — they must conform to a narrow definition of beauty.” What do you think?

And speaking of redefining beauty: By now you have probably seen some of the amazing adds in The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty, but did you know you can participate? Right now you can Celebrate the Unstoppable Girl in Your Life by sharing her story on the website (that mighty even appear on Katie Couric’s show!)

LAST THING: Worried about keeping your girls active this summer? We love these download-ready Try at Home Cards from the Women’s Sports Foundation, which inspire girls to find their own fun ways to exercise, like jumping rope and dancing. They also encourage girls to practice making friends, speak out against bullying and more. Check them out!
